Izmir Metropolitan Municipality welcomes young people who want to take part in the game and software industry with open arms. Metropolitan Municipality President Tunç Soyer’s Game Development Center, aiming to turn the city into the biggest innovation and entrepreneurship center by bringing game developers from all around Turkey to one place.
In line with Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer’s goal to transform the city into an innovation and entrepreneurship center, Izmir is preparing to play a leading role in the development of the game industry. Aiming to make the city a game capital, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality provides free game design, program coding, software development, 2D and 3D modeling and online training to entrepreneurs from all over Turkey. With the center in Fuar İzmir, game developers have the opportunity to turn their concepts and dream projects into fully fledged games.
Macar: “We stand with the youth”
Burak Orkun Macar, who is the Business Development and Strategy Coordinator at İZFAŞ had a lot to say about past experiences. “Around 2,5 years ago, we held an esports festival at the İzmir International Fair. We noticed that the youth have a sparkling interest into the world of gaming. We wanted to expand this interest into a more innovative direction. With the vision of turning İzmir into a city of innovation, we wish to encourage our youth into being a part of the gaming industry. We want our youth to work in this field a lot more comfortably. We also provide mentorship and coaching, all of this is so that they can create more valuable, precious and innovative projects.
Demirsar: “This will bring the city of İzmir to an important point”
Co-founder of Digi Game Startup Studio, Doruk Demirsar said “First and foremost we brought esports into İzmir. We saw the huge potential in the city. With a few competitions, we observed high entry count from all over the country. While thinking how we can make this all bigger and better, the idea of the Game Development Center (OYGEM) sprouted into existence. Swiftly we began work, and that’s how turning İzmir into the keystone for game development. Of course you need an idea to make a game, but we don’t stop there. With OYGEM we assist with every resource you need to make your ideas come to life, and assist with publishing games more professionally.”
Güler: “We can do idea exchanges efficiently”
Team Machiavelli co-founder Mehmet Can Güler about digital game development: “This year we embarked on the adventure of digital game development. One of the most important things for us was that many corporations were here. We could engage in idea exchanges and collaborative brainstorming. Being within this ecosystem improves everything for all of us. There’s a huge potential that will bring younger generations into development as well.”
10 weeks of training
Game Development Center contains every hardware, software and equipment for idea bearers to bring their ideas to life, bringing the office comfort and constant networking dynamics together. Experience offices where they can test their games, meeting rooms where they can talk to potential investors and a very comfortable office space are selling points to bring developers from all over Turkey to the Game Development Center. Alongside supporting experienced game developers, OYGEM Academy introduces the industry and trains aspiring and willing young game developers with fundamentals and important skills. The 10 week long online training sessions within the scope of OYGEM Academy contains software, modelling, music and sound effects and game design courses that are entirely free of charge.
